5 Best Places in Asia for a Summer Getaway

While most people might think of the Caribbean or Hawaii as ideal locations for a tropical summer getaway, those aren’t the only places where you can find beautiful beaches and refreshing escapes from the heat. Asia is full of gorgeous ocean scenery and one-of-a-kind summer retreats.

That being said, here’s a countdown of the five places I’d recommend checking out in Asia this coming summer.

5. Marvel at Man-Made Lakes and Sky-Bound Bridges in Malaysia

For a cool summer getaway in Malaysia, a visit to either Putrajaya Lake or Langkawi Sky Bridge (or both!) is an absolute must. Putrajaya consists of both a botanical garden and a man-made lake with the above-pictured mosque-on-water, an amazing example of human ingenuity and design. The garden often sponsors many water activities that will help you keep cool when it’s hot out.

Meanwhile, the Langkawi Sky Bridge is a see-through bridge precariously positioned high up in the mountains. You reach the bridge via ropeway for a breathtaking view of the surrounding island. Despite its looks, the bridge is safe as can be, but that doesn’t lessen the thrill of looking at your feet and seeing straight through to the trees far below. If you have a taste for excitement and adventure, this is site one you don’t want to miss.

4. Embark on a True Getaway in South Korea’s Island Escape

While South Korea isn’t exactly “tropical,” this out-of-the-way country has some out-of-this-world sights, from pristine beaches to green mountain heights where you can get away from the blistering summer heat.

While South Korea’s Busan is somewhat well-known for its beaches and ocean views, today I’d like to highlight Udo Island, which is right off the coast of Jeju, another island a short trip away from mainland Korea.

Udo Island is home to some of the best scenery on Jeju as a whole and makes for an amazing day trip. You can visit one of its many beaches, hike around its hilly landscape, or rent a motorized bike to maximize the fun you’ll have exploring this picturesque island.

3. Explore Okinawa, Japan’s Star-Studded Beach

You may have heard of Okinawa’s famous “star sand” – tiny fossils shaped like stars hidden underneath the sand of the famous Star Sand Beach, Hoshizuna-no-Hama. It’s the only place where you can collect the star-shaped sand, though there are some souvenir shops that sell it as well if you’re not fond of digging. Even if you don’t care for that, though, this beach is also a great place to snorkel and get a close-up of the local marine life swimming amidst the coral.

Seeing this fascinating remnant of an ancient past isn’t the only reason to swing by, though; while most of Japan isn’t really known for its seaside destinations, Okinawa is the exception. Its crystal clear landscapes and underwater caves are an easy match for any Caribbean island. This Japanese getaway comes complete with a wide array of compelling adventures, from mangrove cruises to buffalo cart rides.

There are too many fantastic experiences to number. If you ever plan to visit Japan, don’t forget a stop at this one-of-a-kind island.

2. Try Out Scuba Diving or Elephant Feeding in Thailand

What better way to stay cool than to go diving? Thailand is an amazing place for speedboat tours and scuba diving alike – and you don’t have to be an expert to try it out. If you’re around Phuket, Merlin Divers has several packaged trips designed for newcomers and tourists to Thailand. Even if you’re not up for that kind of adventure, you can take a ride down a waterslide at one of the country’s water-based theme parks, such as Vana Nava’s Water Jungle.

If you’re more in the mood to relax, you can spend some time at one of Thailand’s many beaches instead, or visit the Hutsadin Elephant Foundation for a chance to personally interact with an elephant. Though not as huge as African elephants, these guys are still pretty big – but no worries, as the foundation is careful to keep things safe for both humans and elephants. It’s definitely not something you want to miss if you’re an animal lover.

1. Beautiful Beaches and Stunning Views in Bali, Indonesia

Bali is probably one of the best-known summer destinations on this list, and its name often summons up ideas of relaxing by the sand amidst a colorful abundance of nature. For good reason, too – it’s a tropical paradise filled with gorgeous beaches, rimmed by a clear blue ocean.

There is so much to see in Bali that it can’t all be contained in one tiny little paragraph. However, for a summer getaway, I can give you three great places to start. First is the Sekumpul Waterfalls, possibly the most stunning waterfall in Bali; next is the iconic Tanah Lot Temple, an ancient Hindu shrine whose unique architecture is awe-inspiring in the sunset. Finally, there’s Kelingking Beach, a pristine strip of sand nestled within a half-circle of towering cliffs that make for a one-of-a-kind view.
